In both my professional experience as a Clinical Psychologist and my own personal experience as a new mother, I see too often that a mother's difficulties can be automatically psychopathologised and treated from a medical model, without consideration or understanding of how the (normal) developmental and psychosocial aspects of motherhood impact the mother's wellbeing. Unfortunately, neglecting to consider these factors and ignoring a matrescence perspective can reinforce some of the adjustment difficulties faced by the mother, further impacting her psychological wellbeing.
As a trauma-informed Clinical Psychologist and matrescence coach, I offer matrescence consultation and clinical supervision for professionals working with mothers, exploring cases with a matrescence-informed lens. If you are a health professional working with parents (e.g. GP, midwife, health visitor, obstetrician, psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, doula) and would like to better understand the potential motherhood adjustment challenges your clients are facing, please contact me for further information.
